Three Cheers for Special Educators

I just read a blog which gave special education a negative tone....how sad. The blog encouraged teachers to not refer children experiencing difficulties and painted a "wait and see" suggestion. I wanted to comment....oh how I did, but I was a good teacher and held my thoughts. The special education teachers I work with are some of the most creative, intelligent and dedicated teachers I know.  The children make amazing progress with their guidance and unique instructional strategies. Being labeled as needing special education is not anything negative! It gives these special learners the gift of high quality individualized instruction to help them reach their highest learning potential!  I have taught special education for 18 years.  My daughter currently received special instruction for her learning disability and has made the honor or merit roll for the last 5 quarters. I couldn't be prouder of her accomplishments and I am so thankful for her teachers!!
